Here are a few things I learned over the process of producing the documentary film Carb-Loaded: A Culture Dying to Eat

This might sound like an obvious first step, it can be hard to know who to listen to. It’s important to find out the basics of the topic. Knowing WHY lowering your carb intake is beneficial can be a powerful motivator. Do you have a specific goal such as losing weight or lowering your blood sugar? Try to learn how those mechanisms in your body are effected by your diet. For me Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt A.K.A The Diet Doctor and Author Mark Sisson have proved to be invaluable resources.

Watching Carb-Loaded (now on iTunes and Amazon) is a great way to learn about the topic.

Start with the things that are easy for you to cut out. Maybe for you it is soda or deserts. For other people it’s pasta or bread. Whatever it is, try to be conscious of cutting it out of your diet. For instance, maybe you could ask your server to swap your starchy sides for grilled vegetables instead. Analize the easy things that you could change “from the get go”.

Once you are ready to begin an actual lower carb diet, plan out one weeks worth of meals. To successfully transition from the standard american diet to a lower carb way of eating requires forethought. Poor planning will predict whether you enjoy the process and ultimately whether you succeed or fail. It is critical you know in advance what you are going to eat. So browse through Pinterest and sites like The Food Truth to get recipe ideas.

Cravings for your old comfort foods can be powerful! So you need to have healthy low carb snacks on hand. There are so many delicious options out there.  Early on snacks can be the “make or break” for diet change. So try to have delicious  low carb snack options around the house, the office and in the car. For me a low carb way of eating satisfies me to the degree that I don’t need to snack as much as I used to, in time you might discover you need to snack less also.

Try to find people that eat healthfully. Maybe join a local low-carb meet up. Make friends with the people running local sources of low carb food. Meet your local food co-op are find a farmer in your area. Whatever you do don’t go it alone. Now more then ever there are other people trying to eat low carb…so find them! Check out Jimmy Moore’s blog for a great low carb community.
